Avant cette travers\u00e9e, l'objet est appel\u00e9 m\u00e9t\u00e9oro\u00efde lorsqu'il se trouve dans l'espace, et m\u00e9t\u00e9ore pendant sa phase lumineuse dans l'atmosph\u00e8re \u2014 ce que nous appelons commun\u00e9ment une \u00ab \u00e9toile filante \u00bb.<br>\nLa plupart des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites proviennent de la ceinture d'ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes, situ\u00e9e entre Mars et Jupiter, o\u00f9 des millions de corps rocheux et m\u00e9talliques orbitent autour du Soleil. Certaines, plus rares, proviennent de la Lune ou de Mars, \u00e9ject\u00e9es par des impacts violents. On estime qu'environ 44 tonnes de mati\u00e8re extraterrestre tombent sur Terre chaque jour, mais la grande majorit\u00e9 se consume dans l'atmosph\u00e8re ou tombe dans les oc\u00e9ans.\n\u00c0 ce jour, le Meteoritical Bulletin Database \u2014 la r\u00e9f\u00e9rence internationale g\u00e9r\u00e9e par la Meteoritical Society \u2014 recense plus de 75 000 m\u00e9t\u00e9orites nomm\u00e9es et
