Des \u00e9clats de cristal ambr\u00e9 et vert olive, translucides comme du verre, ench\u00e2ss\u00e9s dans une matrice m\u00e9tallique argent\u00e9e. Quand la lumi\u00e8re les traverse, ils s&rsquo;illuminent d&rsquo;un \u00e9clat dor\u00e9-vert qui n&rsquo;a d&rsquo;\u00e9quivalent dans aucun autre objet naturel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">Ce sont les pallasites \u2014 et elles comptent parmi les objets les plus rares et les plus beaux de notre syst\u00e8me solaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moins de 1 % des m\u00e9t\u00e9orites connues<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">Sur les quelque 75 000 m\u00e9t\u00e9orites r\u00e9pertori\u00e9es dans la base de donn\u00e9es du Meteoritical Bulletin, les pallasites ne repr\u00e9sentent qu&rsquo;une fraction infime. On en conna\u00eet environ 120 sp\u00e9cimens dans le monde entier. Pour donner une perspective : on d\u00e9couvre plus de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces d&rsquo;insectes chaque ann\u00e9e qu&rsquo;on n&rsquo;a jamais trouv\u00e9 de pallasites dans toute l&rsquo;histoire de l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">Le nom \u00ab pallasite \u00bb rend hommage au naturaliste allemand Peter Simon Pallas, qui d\u00e9crivit en 1772 un sp\u00e9cimen massif d\u00e9couvert pr\u00e8s de Krasno\u00efarsk, en Sib\u00e9rie. Aujourd&rsquo;hui connue sous le nom de \u00ab Krasno\u00efarsk \u00bb ou \u00ab m\u00e9t\u00e9orite de Pallas \u00bb, cette masse de pr\u00e8s de 700 kg fut la premi\u00e8re m\u00e9t\u00e9orite mixte scientifiquement document\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">N\u00e9es \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re entre deux mondes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La formation des pallasites est intimement li\u00e9e \u00e0 la diff\u00e9renciation des ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes primitifs. Dans les premiers millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es du syst\u00e8me solaire, la chaleur g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e par la d\u00e9sint\u00e9gration d&rsquo;isotopes radioactifs \u00e0 courte dur\u00e9e de vie \u2014 principalement l&rsquo;aluminium-26 \u2014 a fait fondre certains ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes suffisamment massifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comme dans une fonderie cosmique, les mat\u00e9riaux se sont alors s\u00e9par\u00e9s par densit\u00e9. Le fer et le nickel, plus lourds, ont coul\u00e9 vers le centre pour former un noyau m\u00e9tallique. Les silicates, plus l\u00e9gers, ont migr\u00e9 vers l&rsquo;ext\u00e9rieur pour constituer un manteau rocheux. Et \u00e0 l&rsquo;interface entre ces deux couches \u2014 \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re du noyau et du manteau \u2014 s&rsquo;est form\u00e9e une zone de transition unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C&rsquo;est dans cette zone que sont n\u00e9es les pallasites. Les cristaux d&rsquo;olivine du manteau basal se sont retrouv\u00e9s ench\u00e2ss\u00e9s dans le m\u00e9tal en fusion du noyau externe, cr\u00e9ant ce m\u00e9lange spectaculaire de cristal et de m\u00e9tal. Puis l&rsquo;ast\u00e9ro\u00efde s&rsquo;est lentement refroidi, figeant \u00e0 jamais cette configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Des collisions ult\u00e9rieures entre ast\u00e9ro\u00efdes ont fragment\u00e9 ces corps diff\u00e9renci\u00e9s, dispersant des morceaux de cette zone de transition dans l&rsquo;espace. Apr\u00e8s des millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es d&rsquo;errance orbitale, certains de ces fragments ont crois\u00e9 la route de la Terre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fukang : la plus spectaculaire<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En l&rsquo;an 2000, pr\u00e8s de la ville de Fukang, dans la r\u00e9gion du Xinjiang en Chine, un randonneur remarque une grosse roche m\u00e9tallique inhabituelle. La masse de plus de 1 000 kilogrammes s&rsquo;av\u00e8re \u00eatre l&rsquo;une des plus grandes pallasites jamais d\u00e9couvertes \u2014 et sans doute la plus spectaculaire visuellement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les cristaux d&rsquo;olivine de Fukang sont d&rsquo;une qualit\u00e9 exceptionnelle : larges, translucides, avec tr\u00e8s peu d&rsquo;inclusions ou de fractures. Quand ils sont d\u00e9coup\u00e9s en tranches fines et r\u00e9tro\u00e9clair\u00e9s, l&rsquo;effet est saisissant. La lumi\u00e8re traverse les cristaux en cr\u00e9ant un d\u00e9grad\u00e9 allant du vert olive au jaune dor\u00e9, exactement comme la lumi\u00e8re traversant un vitrail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fukang a \u00e9t\u00e9 fragment\u00e9e et ses tranches sont dispers\u00e9es dans des collections du monde entier. En 2008, une tranche de 31 kg a \u00e9t\u00e9 propos\u00e9e aux ench\u00e8res chez Bonhams, estim\u00e9e \u00e0 2 millions de dollars. Le prix au gramme des belles tranches de Fukang d\u00e9passe largement celui de l&rsquo;or.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Esquel : l&rsquo;argentinine de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;autre pallasite embl\u00e9matique est Esquel, d\u00e9couverte en 1951 dans la province de Chubut, en Patagonie argentine. Pesant environ 755 kg \u00e0 l&rsquo;origine, elle est consid\u00e9r\u00e9e par de nombreux sp\u00e9cialistes comme la pallasite de \u00ab r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00bb pour la beaut\u00e9 et la qualit\u00e9 de ses cristaux d&rsquo;olivine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ce qui distingue Esquel est la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 de tailles et de formes de ses cristaux. Certains sont petits et arrondis, d&rsquo;autres grands et angulaires. Cette diversit\u00e9 cr\u00e9e une texture visuelle riche et complexe que l&rsquo;on ne retrouve pas dans d&rsquo;autres pallasites plus homog\u00e8nes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La datation par isotopes place la formation d&rsquo;Esquel \u00e0 environ 4,5 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es \u2014 quasiment l&rsquo;\u00e2ge du syst\u00e8me solaire lui-m\u00eame. Tenir une tranche d&rsquo;Esquel, c&rsquo;est tenir un fragment de la naissance de notre voisinage cosmique.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imaginez un vitrail naturel, form\u00e9
